Letters of Inquiry & Grant Applications

Added: Current Funding Status: We appreciate your commitment to helping others find recovery. Please note that the foundation has just made a substantial commitment involving the acquisition of a treatment facility, which will warrant our available funding for the foreseeable future. As such, we are not accepting LOI’s at this time.

Please see below for an overview of our standard grant application process:

We support organizations whose primary focus is to help individuals to recover from substance use disorder.  Due to the lack of treatment services, opportunities to support new or expanding programs that will allow more people to seek recovery are particularly attractive to HFF.

If you are interested in applying for a grant from The Hanley Family Foundation (HFF), you must begin the process by submitting online a letter of inquiry (LOI). This will enable us to determine if it is appropriate and timely for you to apply for a grant.  To qualify, your organization must be a public charity and tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and it must have a project or program that, if funded, would further our stated mission. We do not currently fund grants to organizations whose primary focus is medical research, prevention or education programs or public policy related to SUD.

HFF’s fiscal year runs from June 1 to May 31, and has 2 funding cycles. To be considered in the first, LOIs must be submitted by July 31 and applications by September 30. (Any LOIs submitted after July 31 will be considered in the second cycle.) For the 2nd cycle, LOIs must be in by January 31 and applications by March 31.

Prior Applicants: The Foundation will only consider one request from an applicant every 18 months. If you did receive funding from the foundation, please wait 18 months from the date the funding was completed before submitting another LOI.

STEP 1: CREATE AN ONLINE ACCOUNT

  • Provide the email address of the person who would be ultimately responsible for administration of the grant. This email address and a password will be used to login in the future.

STEP 2: COMPLETE A LETTER OF INQUIRY (LOI)

  • Answer online some preliminary questions that will enable HFF to determine if the project or program you are seeking support for would be a good fit, given HFF’s mission, priorities, and available funds.

STEP 3: HFF REVIEWS THE LOI

  • HFF will review your submission. If additional information is needed for HFF to make a determination whether you should proceed with a full grant request, HFF will notify you. Once HFF has completed its review of the submitted information, you will be informed whether you should proceed to the next step.

STEP 4: COMPLETE A FULL GRANT REQUEST

  • Answer online additional questions that will give us a more complete understanding of your organization and the project or program that would be funded by the requested grant. You will also be asked to upload certain documents for review. Again, HFF will contact you if clarification or supplemental information is needed.

STEP 5: FINAL GRANT DECISIONS ARE MADE

  • HFF’s Board of Directors will evaluate the grant requests it has received and decide which it will fund. If HFF decides to provide funding for your project, you will be required to execute online a grant agreement that confirms the terms of the grant. Funding will normally occur in November or May.

Prior to beginning the full application process, we encourage you to review the questions you will be asked. Click here to view them.  In answering them, please emphasize what your project or program will do. We understand how significant the problem of substance use disorder is, so while you should state the specific problem you are addressing, please focus on a description of your proposed solution. Please avoid repetition in your answers.
